Melbourne Summit Seals Heritage Repatriation Deal

In Melbourne on July 9, the third annual India‑Australia summit culminated in a historic pledge: Australia will voluntarily send back three Tamil Nadu cultural icons to India. The items—an ancient stone sculpture of the bull Nandi, a bronze trident representing the goddess Bhadrakali, and a six‑faced stone idol of Kartikeya (also known as Shanmukha)—are currently housed in Australian cultural repositories and will be transferred after the required clearance procedures.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted that protecting each other's heritage forms a vital pillar of their bilateral relationship. Their bilateral talks were complemented by a broader delegation meeting that reviewed progress on a six‑year strategic partnership.

Both governments agreed to accelerate the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, aiming to energise trade and investment flows. They also celebrated achievements of the India‑Australia CEO Forum and the Economic Business Roadmap, noting expanding Australian university footprints in India as a driver of research and skill development.

The leaders praised the Indian diaspora in Australia for acting as a dynamic link between the two societies and for fostering cultural and social ties. The decision to return the artifacts was described as an expression of shared trust and respect.

Additional MoUs were signed covering defence and security, energy security, education, solar power, traditional knowledge, as well as sectors such as maritime security, emerging technologies, science, and film production, reinforcing a joint vision for a stable, open Indo‑Pacific region.
