Melbourne ceremony underscores expanding defence and trade cooperation

Melbourne’s Government House hosted a high‑profile ceremony on July 9, marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Australia. The event was attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victoria Governor Margaret Gardner, and included a line of Australian soldiers as a ceremonial guard.

The Indian national anthem filled the venue while Modi exchanged pleasantries with Albanese. He also sat down with former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, a meeting that Modi later posted about, describing the dialogue as productive for the India‑Australia friendship.

The reception arrived a day after the India‑Australia CEO Forum, where Modi and Albanese discussed ways to deepen economic and strategic links. The visit, part of Modi’s six‑day tour, highlights ongoing growth in trade, investment, education, defence, technology, energy, mineral extraction and maritime security partnerships.
