Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled plans for a robust new strategic alliance with India, focusing on energy, talent mobility, innovation, and artificial intelligence. Addressing the press in Sydney, Carney described the partnership as a response to dynamic global conditions and a shared vision for enhanced economic and tech ties.
At its heart lies a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement targeted for completion this year, designed to catalyze trade growth. Preceding this, high-stakes commercial deals exceeding $5 billion have already been sealed in India, setting the stage for bilateral trade to surge past $70 billion by 2030. Carney noted these pacts would drive investments and collaborative ventures across borders.
A highlight is the energy sector collaboration, including a landmark $2.6 billion uranium supply contract with KEPCO to fuel India’s civilian nuclear ambitions with clean, dependable power. This move aligns with global pushes for sustainable energy solutions.
Innovation and education are also key fronts. The newly launched Canada-India Talent and Innovation Strategy, supported by 13 university collaborations, will bridge talent gaps and spark cutting-edge advancements, particularly in AI.
Carney pointed to intensified government-level interactions in recent months—more frequent than the last 20 years combined—signaling a renewed commitment. This partnership not only strengthens economic interdependence but positions both countries as frontrunners in a multipolar world, promising long-term gains in trade, technology, and sustainability.
