Maritime Security Concerns Rise After Houthi Strike on Merchant Ship

Security experts warn that the recent Houthi assault on a merchant vessel in the Bab al-Mandab Strait raises serious maritime safety concerns for the Red Sea region. The attack, which claimed the lives of three crew members – two from Pakistan and one from Indonesia – underscores the growing threat to international shipping lanes.

The strike was reported by a pro‑government Yemeni media outlet linked to the National Resistance Forces. No details were released about the ship's identity, the weapon system used, or the severity of the damage inflicted.

The event follows a series of Houthi‑initiated missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabian targets and an earlier declaration by the group to impose a shipping ban on vessels associated with Saudi Arabia. These developments have prompted the internationally recognised Yemeni government to reaffirm its commitment to counter‑offensive operations.

Rashad al‑Alimi, chair of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, emphasized that government forces are now better equipped to handle the escalation and will not allow the Houthis to dictate the parameters of any future engagements.
