New York City is witnessing significant voter engagement in its mayoral election, with approximately 735,000 ballots already cast. Early voting numbers indicate a strong turnout, particularly among younger demographics. Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is currently positioned as the frontrunner, holding a notable lead over his primary rival, Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Recent polling data suggests Mamdani is in a commanding position. An AtlasIntel poll conducted in late October found him with 41% support, compared to Cuomo’s 34% and Sliwa’s 24%. While this represents a narrowing of his margin, other surveys have shown a more substantial lead for Mamdani. For instance, a Fox News-Beacon Research poll placed him ahead by 16 points, and a Marist University poll showed similar results. Other polls from Quinnipiac University, Manhattan Institute, and Victory Insights also indicate Mamdani ahead by double-digit percentages.
The surge in early voting is particularly evident among young New Yorkers. While initial days saw a moderate turnout from voters under 35, the final days of early voting experienced a significant increase. Over 100,000 voters younger than 35 cast ballots in the latter half of the early voting period, with more than 45,000 of those voting on the final Sunday.
