Lula Wins Brazil Presidency, Modi Pledges Global South Ties

New Delhi, October 26: Narendra Modi has extended congratulations to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for winning the Brazilian presidential election in a strong performance. The Prime Minister called Lula a dear friend and said he hoped both nations would cooperate to uplift the Global South.

In a post on the social media platform X, Modi conveyed his feelings about the result. He said he was delighted to congratulate President Lula on his excellent re-election and was keen to work with him to deepen and expand India-Brazil multidimensional strategic partnership.

The Prime Minister added that the two sides would keep building cooperation across different sectors and would promote shared Global South priorities. He also said they would work toward creating a world that is more inclusive, just and sustainable.

Lula's visit to India in February 2026 laid the groundwork for these ties. At Hyderabad House, he and Modi discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, defence, clean energy and agriculture, along with issues of importance to the Global South.

Voting in the second round was held on Sunday, and results followed soon after. Lula, aged 80, claimed a fourth victory in a presidential race. He had lagged behind in the first round against Flavio Bolsonaro but reversed the situation in the final round.
