Lithuania to Chair EU Council 2027, Aims to Fast‑Track India‑EU Trade Deal

Lithuania will assume the rotating presidency of the European Union Council from January to June 2027. The ambassador said this tenure offers a strategic window to push the India‑EU free‑trade agreement through final stages and ensure its swift entry into force. She expressed confidence that the council’s agenda will prioritize trade liberalisation, allowing both sides to reap economic benefits.

Mikeviciene emphasized that the FTA balances liberal access to markets with safeguards for sensitive industries, making it a landmark achievement for both India and the EU. She expects the agreement to be signed before the year ends and to become operational during Lithuania’s council presidency.
