Legal Battle Over Private‑Funded White House Ballroom Pauses Lower Court Orders

The United States Supreme Court on Friday issued a short‑term stay that lifts the injunctions placed by lower courts on the construction of a new ballroom inside the White House. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the order, allowing work to resume while the Court evaluates the case.

The administration’s filing states that, as of Aug. 14, about 65 % of the $400 million privately financed project had been completed. Approximately 250 laborers are said to be working around the clock, up to twenty hours daily, seven days a week.

The stay follows a July 7 ruling by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, which had ordered a halt to the project, calling it illegal and granting a 14‑day pause for an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Historic preservation advocates argue that the expansion bypassed required environmental and historic‑preservation consultations and proceeded without explicit congressional authorization. The plan involves gutting portions of the East Wing to create a 90,000‑square‑foot ballroom that would be funded entirely by private donations.

While some White House aides and Republican lawmakers have voiced support for the addition, others have raised concerns about transparency and oversight.

Former President Donald Trump has framed the undertaking as a symbol of the nation’s rebirth, drawing parallels to grand halls in other major powers.

The Supreme Court’s interim order does not settle the substantive legal dispute, leaving the ultimate fate of the ballroom uncertain.
