Legacy of Sheikh Hamad: Transforming Qatar from 1995‑2013
Doha, 12 July – The passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani marks the end of an era that reshaped Qatar’s destiny. Ascending to the throne in 1995 without bloodshed, he embarked on a program of economic, social and cultural reforms that elevated the peninsula’s smallest nation to global prominence.
During his 18‑year reign, Qatar’s liquefied natural‑gas (LNG) capacity exploded, catapulting the country to the top of per‑capita wealth rankings. He leveraged this wealth to invest in education, health, sports and infrastructure, creating a modern metropolis that attracted worldwide attention.
In foreign affairs, Sheikh Hamad adopted a more proactive stance, using Qatar’s financial clout to mediate conflicts, host high‑profile diplomatic talks and position Doha as a neutral meeting ground for rival powers.
His legacy includes the successful bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the groundbreaking 2012 UN Climate Conference, and the Doha Agreement that halted hostilities between Israel and Hamas in 2021.
Sheikh Hamad’s voluntary abdication in 2013 paved the way for his fourth son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to continue the vision of a prosperous, globally engaged Qatar.
