According to a recent study published in Science, almost half of China’s major cities are sinking. This problem is more serious for the coastal areas of China. According to estimates, one-fourth of this land could sink below sea level within the next century. The research, led by Tao Shengli of Peking University, used satellite radar pulses to assess elevation changes in 82 Chinese cities from 2015 to 2022. The findings indicate that about 16% of the area in these cities is sinking faster than 10 millimeters. While experiencing a moderate decline of about 45% per year. Notable cities affected include Beijing, Fuzhou, Hefei and Xi’an.

The northern city of Tianjin, with a population of more than 15 million, has been considered one of the most seriously affected areas. Ding Xiaoli, a geodesy expert at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, highlighted that landslides are a global issue, not limited to China. Factors contributing to sinking include natural conditions such as groundwater depletion, the weight of urban structures, and rock depth.
