Authorities Probe Cause of Fatal Lahore Structure Failure

Following the deadly collapse of a residential building in Lahore’s Harbanspura district, the provincial administration has initiated a comprehensive investigation. Retired Captain Muhammad Ali Ijaz, the Deputy Commissioner, has tasked a special team to examine construction records, material quality, and compliance with safety codes.

Preliminary reports indicate that the building housed three brothers and their extended families, as well as a sister and her children who were present for a birthday gathering. The sudden collapse left eleven dead and six injured, prompting urgent rescue operations.

Human rights organizations have previously highlighted similar incidents, such as the July roof collapse at a private tuition centre in Kahna that killed fourteen children. They argue that lax enforcement of building standards is a recurring problem.

The investigation will also assess whether any illegal modifications or substandard materials were used. Officials have pledged to hold accountable any parties found responsible and to implement stricter oversight to prevent future tragedies.
