Lack of dedicated cyber unit hampers Bangladesh police response to rising online scams

Bangladesh’s police force has recorded 4,794 cases under the Information and Obscenity Control Act‑2012, ICT Act‑2006 and Digital Security Act‑2018 over the past five years. However, the lack of a dedicated cyber‑crime division remains a critical bottleneck. Approximately 72 percent of filed complaints either stall or are dismissed for insufficient evidence, according to local media. Police IG Ali Hossain Fakir described cyber fraud and the spread of online rumors as among the biggest challenges to law and order in the country.
