Kyushu Earthquake Aftershocks Hamper Search for Survivors

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu’s southwest coast on Tuesday has now been confirmed to have caused thirty fatalities. More than sixty injuries have been reported, and many victims are still believed to be buried under rubble.

Rescue agencies have deployed roughly 5,000 personnel from Japan’s Self‑Defense Forces to assist in the ongoing rescue and recovery work. However, the operation encountered fresh obstacles on Thursday when a 5.8‑magnitude aftershock rippled through the area under sweltering conditions of 35 °C.

Aion’s shopping mall in the town of Kashima became a major site of the emergency response. Around 170 rescuers are working inside the damaged structure, where thousands of shoppers were present during the quake. Approximately 3,000 customers were successfully guided to a safe parking lot before the building began to collapse.

A later gas explosion in a different part of the mall claimed the lives of three employees who had re‑entered after the original evacuation. Eight people have been extracted from the wreckage so far; three of those rescued later succumbed to their injuries.

The mall’s management conceded that it had not foreseen the likelihood of a gas blast and publicly apologized for the oversight.

In Yatsushiro, a chimney collapse at the Nippon Paper manufacturing plant left seven staff members trapped. Five are confirmed dead, two remain gravely injured, and four are still missing, prompting continued searches by police and SDF teams.

The disaster also recorded Japan’s first foreign casualty in this event: a Vietnamese technical trainee was killed when a crane fell onto him at his workplace, as reported by Vietnam’s authorities.
