Escalating Terror Threat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Claims Another Police Life

The ongoing wave of terror‑related violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa claimed another police life on Sunday when unknown assailants opened fire on two constables in the Surani locality of Bannu district. Constable Saifullah Khan and Constable Mirza Bait Shah, both serving at the Surani township police post, were fatally wounded as they returned from their shift.

Police officials immediately launched a comprehensive search operation to track down the gunmen. District Police Officer Captain (Retired) Mohammad Furkan Bilal reported that security has been reinforced with additional checkpoints and patrol units throughout the district.

The shooting follows a spate of high‑profile attacks across the province. Two days prior, a police outpost in Barang tehsil of Bajaur district was struck, killing one officer and injuring another. Earlier in the month, a suicide blast at Swat’s Kabir police station resulted in 14 deaths, including police personnel, and left 18 people injured.

Late July saw a lethal assault on a police checkpoint in Hangu, killing nine officers, while a joint security sweep in Swat’s Kabal and Mattan tehsils on July 29 resulted in one police officer and four members of the village defence committee being killed.

The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies noted that July’s death toll of 112 security personnel is the highest monthly total since January 2023 and the second‑largest in a ten‑year span. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 154 fatalities in July, a 105% increase over June, with the number of injured rising to 98.
