Korean Peninsula faces storm of chaos, says North Korea over Yasukuni shrine pilgrimage

North Korean officials warned on August 24 that the Yasukuni shrine visit by Japanese prime ministerial and defence officials could trigger a "catastrophic storm" across the Korean Peninsula.

The KCNA commentary described the trip as an "obsessive neo‑militarist frenzy" that threatens to destabilise the region. It accused Japan of using the shrine, which honors war dead and convicted war criminals, to promote a resurgence of militaristic sentiment.

The statement also referenced South Korea’s earlier protest, calling on Japan to confront its wartime past with authentic remorse. Pyongyang reiterated its criticism of Japan’s growing defence capabilities and policy shifts, framing them as part of a broader pattern of new militarism.
