Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Rule Threatens Provincial Autonomy
Dhaka, October 17 – Provincial politics in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have entered a new phase following the federal decision to impose Governor’s Rule in the region. The move comes after Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi announced a Long March aimed at securing the release of Imran Khan, a demand the central government rejected.
According to a local newspaper’s investigative report, the federal cabinet blamed Afridi for the breakdown of talks and justified the Governor’s Rule as a necessary step to maintain order. Historically, such direct rule has been associated with curtailments of provincial powers, suspension of elected assemblies, and a clampdown on civil liberties. The report warns that the current situation mirrors past episodes where Governor’s Rule led to heightened unrest and political stagnation.
Opposition parties and civil‑society groups have condemned the decision, labeling it as an attempt to silence dissent in a province that traditionally leans toward PTI. The article urges a speedy return to democratic governance and cautions that prolonged Governor’s Rule could exacerbate regional grievances, potentially destabilising the broader national landscape.
