Key IMF Conditions: Banking Overhaul, Subsidy Cuts, and Climate Resilience

Dhaka, August 21 – The IMF has outlined a set of core reforms that Bangladesh must implement to access both existing and new loan facilities. The conditions focus on five strategic areas.

1. Banking sector reform – updating banking regulations and strengthening supervisory frameworks. 2. Revenue enhancement – boosting the National Board of Revenue’s ability to collect taxes and providing a digital gateway for taxpayer information. 3. Subsidy reduction – phasing out fuel and electricity subsidies to improve fiscal balance. 4. Exchange‑rate policy – adopting a market‑based foreign‑exchange rate mechanism. 5. Climate‑risk capacity – building institutional expertise to assess and respond to climate‑related threats.

These reforms are seen as essential for improving Bangladesh’s economic stability and for meeting the objectives of the IMF’s Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).
