Kandahar Traffic Mishap Leaves Five Dead, Dozens Hurt
On Thursday morning, a catastrophic collision between a truck and a bus occurred on a highway in Kandahar’s Daman district, resulting in five fatalities and fifteen injuries, according to the provincial traffic police.
The truck, traveling eastbound, struck the oncoming bus directly, causing both vehicles to stop abruptly and trapping passengers inside. Emergency responders arrived quickly, stabilizing the injured before transporting them to a nearby medical facility.
Provincial traffic police chief Mohammad Tahir emphasized that several of the injured remain in critical condition. He also noted that investigators are reviewing the event for possible violations such as speeding or driver fatigue.
The accident follows a series of fatal road incidents that have unfolded across Afghanistan. On September 23, a crash in Takhar province led to eight deaths and four injuries. The day before, a mini‑bus in Laghman province fell into a deep ditch, killing one and wounding nine. In Nangarhar province on September 20, a family of four perished when their car collided with a tree after losing control at high speed.
These repeated tragedies highlight the urgent need for comprehensive road safety reforms, including better vehicle maintenance checks, stricter enforcement of speed limits, and public education on safe driving practices.
