Justice Served: Massive Jail Terms for Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday Terrorists

In a decisive move, the Sri Lanka High Court handed down unprecedented jail terms to fifteen persons linked to the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks. The bombings, which targeted three major churches and three prominent hotels, resulted in 267 fatalities and injured around 600 individuals, including dozens of foreign visitors.

The court’s decision, announced on 23 September, apportioned sentences based on each accused’s involvement. Five men received 200‑year imprisonment, another five were sentenced to 220 years, four got 240 years, and one received the highest penalty of 260 years. The judgments were grounded in over 23,000 charges that covered murder, terrorist plotting, and the illegal handling of explosives.

Authorities also ordered the confiscation of the convicts’ assets, signalling a broader attempt to dismantle any financial networks supporting extremist activities. The proceedings were conducted under heightened security, with a substantial police presence around the courthouse.

While none of those convicted were identified as the suicide bombers who perished in the blasts, prosecutors emphasized that the attacks were pre‑meditated, aiming not only at Christian worshippers but also at the nation’s tourism sector.
