July 5 Marks Darkest Day in Uyghur History, Advocates Demand Truth

Washington — The 17th anniversary of the July 5, 2009, Urumqi tragedy is being observed by Uyghur advocacy groups as a solemn reminder of one of the darkest chapters in the community’s modern history. On that day, thousands of Uyghur youths marched toward Urumqi’s People’s Square to protest a claimed racial attack in Shaoguan that had led to the deaths of two Uyghurs.

Security forces responded with lethal force from July 5 through July 7, resulting in a wave of killings, forced disappearances, and serious injuries among demonstrators who were demanding equal rights and judicial fairness. The World Uyghur Congress describes the incident as a state‑directed violent suppression that laid the groundwork for the systemic oppression witnessed today.

Leaders of the WUC and the Uyghur Human Rights Project reiterated their call for the international community to press Beijing for full transparency on the fate of the victims. They argued that the absence of an independent global inquiry allows China to continue policies that include mass incarceration, forced labor, and the separation of families.

Both organisations urged United Nations mechanisms, foreign governments, and civil‑society actors to adopt concrete measures—such as targeted sanctions and diplomatic resolutions—that would compel China to release detailed records and to cease further human‑rights violations.
