Judge Sets June 2027 Date for Venezuelan Leaders' US Proceedings

In a short procedural session on July 23, Judge Alvin Helsterin ordered that the criminal proceedings against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse Cilia Flores begin on June 1, 2027. The hearing, lasting only fifteen minutes, allowed both the prosecution and defense lawyers to present preliminary positions before the date was locked in.

Defense attorney Barry Polak announced plans to challenge the indictment on the basis of sovereign immunity, a legal doctrine that could exempt a sitting head of state from prosecution. The case originated from a January 3 U.S. military action that captured the couple in Caracas and transferred them to a detention center in Brooklyn, New York. The raid sparked international outrage and has been widely condemned as an overreach of U.S. power.

During an initial appearance on January 5, Maduro denied every charge, including those linked to alleged drug‑trafficking networks, insisting that he was apprehended at his residence in Caracas. Both Maduro and Flores remain incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while the legal process moves toward the 2027 trial date.
