Jordan Tightens Safety Measures; Americans Urged to Register with STEP

Jordan has heightened its security protocols around key infrastructure after a series of regional developments. The U.S. Embassy in Amman responded by releasing an advisory that asks American citizens to avoid the Aqaba International Airport, the Aqaba seaport, and any military installations until the threat level eases.

The advisory cites a "specific and reliable report" from Jordanian authorities that prompted the temporary closure of civilian operations at the airport and port. Travelers are instructed to follow all local security orders, keep away from protests, and remain vigilant for police‑controlled areas.

The embassy also highlighted the importance of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). By enrolling, U.S. nationals receive continuous updates on safety conditions and enable the embassy to reach them quickly if an evacuation or other assistance becomes necessary.

This guidance reinforces a March 2, 2026 order that required non‑essential U.S. government employees and their families to leave Jordan due to escalating tensions with Iran. Earlier this year, an Iranian‑linked attack on a Jordanian target resulted in the deaths of two American service members, prompting both Washington and Amman to tighten protective measures around airports, ports, and military sites.
