Joint working group to steer India‑Japan energy dialogue and market stability
The July 2 declaration highlighted the creation of a joint working group under the India‑Japan Energy Dialogue to operationalise the newly agreed cooperation. This body will meet regularly to share the latest developments in the energy sector, identify common‑interest projects and chart new avenues for collaboration.
The joint working group will be tasked with monitoring global oil and gas market dynamics, coordinating responses to price fluctuations, and seeking diversified sources of supply beyond traditional partners. It will also explore joint upstream investments, including potential participation in oil and gas fields in third‑party countries, thereby expanding the strategic footprint of both nations.
Institutional participants will include India’s Indian National Oil Companies and Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited, while Japan will be represented by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. These entities will contribute technical expertise, financial resources and policy guidance to drive the partnership forward.
Both governments stressed that the working group will serve as a platform to strengthen regional energy security, especially for South Asia, and to complement broader initiatives such as the PWRER Asia partnership. By institutionalising dialogue, India and Japan aim to ensure a steady, affordable supply of energy and to mitigate the impact of geopolitical instability on their economies.
