Joint Task Force 401 Explores Continuous Power Needs of Laser and Microwave Drone Defenses

Brigadier General Matt Ross told reporters that Joint Interagency Task Force‑401 will install the directed‑energy suite at a designated military site and keep it operational for an entire year. The aim is to map out the electricity footprint of both the high‑energy laser and the high‑power microwave arrays, as well as to track wear and tear on critical components.

The pilot will measure how many days per year the weapons can function without shutting down for repairs and how often specialist technicians must intervene. The Army hopes this data will help shape procurement decisions and future tactical doctrines for counter‑UAV operations.

In addition to technical performance, the project will evaluate safety protocols to ensure that the emitted energy does not endanger civilian aircraft or nearby personnel. The ultimate goal is to develop a set of standard operating procedures that allow bases to field directed‑energy weapons without imposing air‑space restrictions.

The initiative reflects growing global interest in affordable, low‑cost unmanned aerial systems and the corresponding need for effective, scalable defenses.
