Joint Naval Exercises Highlight Growing Ties of India and Thailand

On September 3, 2026, naval leaders from India and Thailand convened in New Delhi for the 14th Staff Talk, a key forum for advancing bilateral maritime cooperation. Rear Admiral Sachin A. Sikerra of the Indian Navy and Rear Admiral Chaksa Wat Saivong of the Royal Thai Navy led the talks, reaffirming a shared vision for a secure Indo‑Pacific.

The discussion centered on expanding joint training programmes, enhancing capacity‑building projects, and exploring new fields for cooperation, ranging from humanitarian assistance to anti‑piracy operations. Both navies agreed to increase the frequency of combined exercises to deepen operational familiarity.

The July joint passage exercise served as a practical example of this cooperation. Indian Eastern Fleet vessels INS Udaygiri, INS Shakti and INS Kavaratti navigated together with Thailand’s HTMS Chaophraya after its Satthahip port stop, testing coordinated manoeuvres and communication protocols.

Beyond the tactical arena, the delegations participated in cultural exchanges, including yoga, sports, and guided tours of each other’s ships. The Thai navy extended a heartfelt farewell, underscoring the personal bonds that complement the professional partnership.
