Joint efforts to curb terrorism financing discussed by India and Italy
Delhi saw a focused exchange on terrorism financing between India’s senior foreign service official Sibi George and Italy’s diplomatic envoy Paolo Mari on 7 October. The two leaders examined the progress of the Joint Working Group’s sixth meeting and outlined concrete steps to block financial streams that sustain terrorist operations.
The dialogue covered the tracking of illicit money movements through traditional banking channels and newer cryptocurrency platforms. Both sides stressed the necessity of a coordinated legal response, recommending the adoption of stricter due‑diligence standards and real‑time data sharing with financial intelligence units.
In addition, the officials reviewed the multilateral framework established during the fifth JWG‑CT session in Rome, which had focused on technology misuse, online radicalisation, and misinformation campaigns. They agreed to reinforce these pillars by engaging with global bodies such as the FATF and the Global Counter‑Terrorism Forum.
The joint statement to be released later this week will highlight a roadmap for enhanced cooperation, reflecting the enduring partnership between India and Italy in the fight against terror financing.
