Joint Commitment to Combat Smuggling, Cybercrime and Trafficking Confirmed at India‑Myanmar Talks

The 23rd national security dialogue between India and Myanmar, held in New Delhi, produced a comprehensive roadmap to fight organized crime across the border. Officials from both Home Ministries outlined a multi‑layered approach that targets drug, arms, wildlife and human trafficking, as well as rising cyber threats.

Representatives agreed to broaden the scope of existing intelligence‑exchange channels, enabling faster detection of illicit shipments and coordinated cyber‑security responses. Training modules for law‑enforcement agencies will now include cyber‑forensic techniques and digital evidence handling.

A significant milestone was the decision to set up a joint task force that will operate under a shared command structure, focusing on dismantling smuggling networks that exploit porous border points. The task force will receive logistical support from both sides and will be monitored through quarterly reviews.

Both parties stressed that safeguarding the India‑Myanmar frontier is essential for regional peace. Myanmar assured that its territory would not be used to facilitate activities detrimental to India’s security interests, while India reiterated its commitment to respecting Myanmar’s sovereignty.

The meeting also reiterated support for infrastructure projects that link the two economies, noting that improved transport corridors can help curb illegal movements by providing legitimate trade alternatives.
