Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton expressed criticism of President Donald Trump’s imposition of high tariffs on India, arguing that this policy has complicated negotiation efforts. Bolton stated that the high tariff policy is a mistake and that the tariffs should be reduced while discussions for a deal proceed. He highlighted the detrimental effects of the tariffs, particularly the 25% tariff levied on India as collateral damage for its purchase of Russian oil. Bolton also noted the disparity in treatment, pointing out that China has not faced similar penalties despite importing more oil and gas from Russia compared to India. In relation to India-US ties, Bolton suggested viewing Trump’s approach as a singular event. He commented that the Government of India should see Trump as a one-time occurrence and pursue steps in its national interest, while understanding this is not reflective of a broader American view. Bolton critiqued Trump’s foreign policy style, describing it as lacking a comprehensive national security strategy and primarily transactional. He believes that the tension between India and the US largely stems from Trump’s erratic style.
