Japanese financial giants urged to expand presence in Indian market
During a high‑profile itinerary in Tokyo, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged senior executives from Japan’s foremost financial institutions to discuss amplifying their footprint in India.
The minister’s encounter with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp’s deputy president Yoshihiro Hayakutome underscored the need for greater banking investment, joint credit facilities, and a stronger financial linkage between the two economies. Goyal pointed to India’s expanding corporate sector and its demand for sophisticated financial solutions.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group’s deputy chairman Yasushi Itagaki joined the conversation, focusing on commercial finance, cross‑border investment streams, and the role of Japanese banks in supporting India’s industrial growth.
The dialogue also covered insurance, where Nippon Life’s managing executive officer Minoru Kimura highlighted opportunities within India’s rapidly growing life‑insurance market, calling for collaborative product innovation and distribution channels.
Goyal emphasized that India’s dynamic financial ecosystem offers Japanese firms a strategic platform to deepen partnerships, boost capital flows, and contribute to India’s ambition to become a leading export and investment hub.
These discussions come at a pivotal time as both nations seek to reinforce economic ties and attract higher levels of Japanese corporate participation in key sectors of the Indian economy.
