Japan‑Australia Partnership Deepens with Mogami‑Class Frigate Deal

The defence relationship between Japan and Australia is entering a new phase as both nations move forward with the acquisition of Mogami‑class frigates.

During his Canberra stop, Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi will review the contract signed in April for the construction of three frigates for the Royal Australian Navy. The vessels, built to Japan’s latest anti‑submarine standards, are a cornerstone of the bilateral security roadmap.

Koizumi and Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles will explore ways to integrate the ships into joint maritime exercises and to share maintenance expertise, reinforcing interoperability in the sea lanes that are vital to regional trade.
