At the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his counterparts from five countries in a series of bilateral sessions. The talks spanned trade, critical minerals, defence and energy cooperation.

The meetings, held on October 31, underscored how India is using multilateral forums to deepen its partnerships across the Americas and Europe.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said the two sides had discussed a trade agreement. Writing on X, she said she had reconnected with Jaishankar in Atlanta, a few weeks after hosting talks in New Delhi. The conversation, she noted, touched on shifting global dynamics and on how to advance a comprehensive trade pact while strengthening regional security cooperation.

Anand also said the global economic order was in transition and that Canada and India had a key role in shaping its direction. She added that the stronger relationship opened possibilities for expanding trade, enhancing energy security and building economic strength.

A statement from Canada’s side said Anand had welcomed progress toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement targeted for completion by year-end. The ministers also agreed that Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Canada in December would be another important milestone in taking bilateral ties further.

Jaishankar said he had reviewed the ongoing progress in cooperation between the two nations.

Speaking about his discussion with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Jaishankar said the talks had included both bilateral and global matters. Brazil’s foreign ministry indicated the meeting was held at the end of the first day of the G20 ministerial gathering and covered the bilateral economic agenda. Jaishankar also congratulated Vieira on the completion of Brazil’s electoral process and asked him to convey warm wishes from Prime Minister Modi to President Lula da Silva.

Jaishankar then met Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno. Jaishankar posted that the discussions covered trade, critical minerals, defence and nuclear cooperation, along with multilateral issues.

He described his meeting with Mexico’s Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez as focused on giving fresh impetus to bilateral relations.

Finally, Jaishankar met Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, expressing pleasure at the meeting and saying he always looked forward to their conversations.
