Italy Considers Suspending Schengen with Spain Amid Ceuta Crisis

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned on X that Rome is prepared to take extraordinary measures to protect its borders and citizens, including the possible suspension of the Schengen agreement with Spain. Meloni cited the alarming images from Ceuta, describing illegal immigration as a direct threat to European border security. She said the interior minister Matteo Piantedosi has been consulted and that Italy will not stand by while uncontrolled migration continues. The Italian deputy prime minister Antonio Tajani echoed the sentiment, supporting a shutdown of Spain’s Schengen participation after Madrid’s decision to grant citizenship to more than 500,000 irregular migrants.
