Iranian Spokesperson Warns Macron Over Handling of Demonstrations
Ismail Baghaei, speaking for Iran’s foreign ministry, addressed President Emmanuel Macron directly after a series of violent confrontations erupted in multiple French municipalities. Baghaei reminded Macron of his own words from January, when he supported Iranian demonstrators’ right to assemble without fear of retribution. He asked why France now condemns similar protests while imposing harsh penalties on those who damage state property.
Baghaei highlighted that the current French upheaval mirrors the earlier Iranian unrest, wherein foreign influences allegedly provoked attacks on police stations and government offices. He also noted that before taking a hard line against Iran, Macron had communicated with the U.S. president about joint “big moves” concerning Tehran, a move Tehran interprets as part of an aggressive campaign.
The spokesperson warned that France’s present turmoil should serve as a cautionary tale, quoting Jean de La Fontaine: clever tactics may ultimately turn against their makers, and betrayal often circles back to its originator.
