Iranian President Set for Moscow Trip Amid Regional Tensions
New Delhi, October 24: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to visit Moscow next week and hold discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Iranian media reports released on Saturday.
The two leaders are likely to focus on economic ties and geopolitical challenges. The meeting comes at a time when tensions in the region remain high and diplomatic channels are under strain.
Reports from Iran say Pezeshkian will travel to Russia on October 27 to attend the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit. The gathering will bring together the heads of state and government of member countries, offering an opportunity for leaders to meet one another.
Speaking about the visit, Iran's ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, said the president would arrive in Moscow on Tuesday to take part in the forum's 8th summit. He added that the final preparations for the trip are underway.
According to Jalali, the meeting between the two leaders will address both economic cooperation and broader geopolitical matters.
Russia and Iran have expanded their relationship over recent years. Their partnership gained momentum after Russia began its full-scale military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. Both countries are currently dealing with international sanctions and are working to strengthen collaboration across multiple fields.
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested that talks involving the presidents of both countries would be held next week. Days earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had traveled to Iran, his first visit since the Middle East conflict started. Araghchi described the current level of cooperation between the two nations as stronger than ever before.
Earlier this month, Putin said Russia was willing to mediate in efforts to end the war, which erupted in February after strikes by the United States and Israel.
US-Iran negotiations have remained stalled for several months. Meanwhile, Washington and Israel have both threatened to launch fresh attacks on Iran. Given these developments, the proposed Putin-Pezeshkian meeting is being regarded as a key event in the context of regional tensions, peace initiatives, and bilateral relations between Moscow and Tehran.
