Iran Says US Ignored Peace Deal Commitments, Shifts to Economic Warfare

In a statement posted to X on August 20, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, asserted that the United States has failed to honor its duties under the peace agreement signed with Tehran.

Gharibabadi claimed that Washington’s breach of the accord has forced Iran to pivot from conventional military engagement to an “economic war” aimed at undermining its resilience. He noted that Iran’s earlier military strategies produced no meaningful gain, prompting a strategic shift.

He further warned that the United States’ portrayal of Iran as a collapsing regime is a miscalculation that could lead to greater American setbacks. The deputy minister called on the international community to recognize Iran’s right to self‑defense and to reject any further attempts at economic coercion.

Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, echoed the sentiment, describing the U.S. sanctions as an attempt to divert attention from domestic economic woes.
