Iran‑Linked Knife Attack on Author Salman Rushdie Leads to Life Sentence

A Manhattan federal courtroom saw Hadi Matar convicted of terrorism after evidence linked his 2022 knife attack on Salman Rushdie to Iran and its allied group Hezbollah. Jurors found Matar guilty of acting under Iranian direction and of providing assistance to a foreign terrorist organization.

Prosecutors displayed a photo of Matar wearing a Hezbollah‑branded shirt and a video in which he echoed the language of the 1989 fatwa that called for Rushdie’s execution. The jury’s decision adds a potential federal life sentence to the 25‑year state term he is already serving.

Matar’s defense lawyer, Nathaniel Barron, maintained that his client acted alone and not as a coordinated agent of Tehran or Hezbollah, though he did not deny the violent act itself.

Rushdie, who was left with a permanently damaged eye, a broken left hand and liver injuries, later authored “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder,” reflecting on the physical and emotional aftermath of the assault. The case underscores the United States’ ability to pursue both state and federal charges for a single act of violence.
