Iran Faces Full Economic Blockade as US Treasury Says 'Economic D-Day'
The United States is preparing what Treasury Secretary Scott Besson calls the largest economic campaign in its history to isolate Iran. Announced on August 24, the operation is intended to cut off the Iranian government's financial resources and shut down trade routes that sustain its economy.
Besson, speaking on the platform X, highlighted that former President Donald Trump has already damaged Iran’s military manufacturing capabilities and delivered a severe blow to its nuclear program. He declared that the United States is entering the final stage of the conflict, describing the upcoming initiative as an "economic D‑Day" – the most extensive economic attack ever launched against a hostile nation.
The proposed measures include tightening sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, blocking its access to international banking systems, and restricting the flow of funds to sovereign entities linked to Tehran.
President Trump, in a statement on Truth Social, warned that any country that continues to aid Iran would face the most stringent economic actions ever taken by the United States, characterising the move as an unprecedented economic war.
In response, Iran’s National Security Council secretary Mohsin Rezaei warned that a prolonged economic conflict would stop all Iranian oil exports through both the Hormuz Strait and the wider Persian Gulf, and that any nation supporting the U.S. measures would be considered in a state of war with Iran.
