Iran Dialogue Continues Directly and Through Mediators: Rubio

The United States says its engagement with Iran has not stopped, although it is not revealing how far those discussions have advanced. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the remarks on October 31 at the close of a G20 foreign ministers' gathering.

Rubio said the dialogue is happening at various levels and in different formats. Some exchanges are direct, while others are conducted through intermediaries.

He declined to specify how long Washington would keep up diplomatic efforts or to describe any movement toward a potential deal.

According to Rubio, the United States stands ready to pursue a diplomatic solution, provided it safeguards American national security interests. He framed Iran's nuclear programme and its support for regional armed groups as the core issues.

He accused those Iran-backed organisations of undermining peace and stability in the Middle East, and charged Tehran with attacking commercial vessels.

When asked when military action could follow if talks collapse, Rubio said that President Trump would make that call. Rubio also avoided comment on the negotiations' progress or any timeframe.

Rubio said President Trump favours a peaceful settlement. He added that the United States has full confidence in its military capabilities and could meet its objectives if needed, but no decision has yet been reached by the president.

He described nightly drone and missile attacks on ships carrying oil, gas and other goods, saying American forces are working to keep sea routes open.

Rubio warned that disruptions to maritime trade could affect the supply of energy, fertiliser and agricultural goods, with effects reaching countries far from the conflict.

Finally, he said Washington will continue meeting its defence obligations to Saudi Arabia, keeps regular contact with Saudi leadership, and welcomes participation by other countries in the kingdom's security.
