Investigation finds pre‑existing pancreatitis caused fatality, army to boost training safeguards

The South Korean army disclosed the results of its investigation into the death of a reserve soldier during a nocturnal drill held near Seoul on May 13. Medical records showed the soldier suffered from chronic pancreatitis, a condition he had been treating for years. Independent forensic consultants verified that the illness, not the exercise, was the direct cause of death.

In light of the findings, the military pledged to reinforce safety and medical protocols for all reservist training.
