Investigation Launched Over Mismatched Polling Station Figures in 2026 Korean Elections

Seoul, August 10 – A joint investigative team comprising prosecutors and police officers has opened a formal inquiry into the vote‑count inconsistencies uncovered after South Korea's June 2026 local elections. The National Election Commission (NEC) disclosed that, among 3,558 polling stations, 1,971 reported different numbers at the close of voting compared with the final certified totals, with about 29 stations showing a variance of 100 votes or more.

One notable case involved an Anseong polling station where the 6 p.m. count listed 2,105 voters, yet the final official figure was only 1,494. In Busan, a station recorded 7,137 voters at the same hour, but the final count rose to 7,922 after the verification process.

The investigative team is also examining allegations that certain NEC officials may have adjusted hourly percentage reports during the election day, a claim that adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing scrutiny of the country's electoral integrity.

NEC officials have responded by stating that hourly updates are provisional and that final numbers can differ after thorough verification, reconciliation of data, and other post‑polling procedures. They argue that these adjustments do not automatically constitute electoral fraud.

The probe will determine whether the discrepancies are the result of standard administrative practices or if they point to intentional interference, a question that remains central to public confidence in South Korea's democratic processes.
