International aid fights cholera as Borno faces 200 fatalities

The cholera epidemic unfolding in Borno state has become a major public‑health emergency, with death figures approaching 200 residents. The rapid spread is attributed to contaminated water supplies, insufficient waste management, and a shortage of functional health facilities.

An international medical humanitarian group, in partnership with Nigeria's health ministry, has treated more than 24,000 suspected cases since the outbreak began. The organization highlighted that, despite the delivery of clean water and sanitation kits, the continued scarcity of safe drinking sources threatens to prolong the crisis.

Authorities have declared a heightened alert across ten states most vulnerable to flood‑related disease outbreaks. Emergency response actions include sealing off access to unsafe reservoirs, expanding water tanker routes, and deploying rapid‑response medical teams to remote villages. Global partners are also providing critical supplies, technical expertise, and financial resources to strengthen disease surveillance and response capacity.
