Inside Yiwei’s Marketplace: Numbers Driving the Global Toy and Apparel Trade
Beijing, July 3 – The FIFA World Cup’s glittering stadiums mask a quieter but massive commercial boom. Roughly seventy percent of the toys and clothing sold to fans worldwide stem from Yiwu, a city in Zhejiang province that has transformed from a humble county into a global wholesale titan.
Official figures for the beginning of 2026 show Yiwu’s small‑goods market handling more than 1.26 million trade units. On an average day, about three hundred thousand buyers flood the market, seeking low‑cost merchandise.
The city now offers over 2.1 million product types, ranging from plastic figurines to budget apparel, exported to more than 230 nations and territories.
Entrepreneur Chang Zuping entered Yiwu’s repair‑tool sector in 2017. Her enterprise now delivers a full chain of services – production, R&D, and marketing – with seven factories operating behind a single storefront and distribution partners in over twenty countries.
Yiwu’s Chi‑Ming‑Shan district, also known as the United Nations Colony, is home to over 1,400 foreign nationals from 74 different countries. They praise the city’s open atmosphere and its capacity to welcome dreamers and innovators.
Shi Qin‑feng, former secretary of the Zhejiang provincial party committee, visited Yiwu multiple times. He remarked that despite lacking coastal or border proximity, the city’s residents have the knack to turn “stone into gold” through bold initiatives and creative thinking. Yiwu’s story encapsulates China’s larger narrative of relentless effort, ingenuity, and steadfast resolve.
