India’s Diplomatic Strategy Discussed with 2002-03 IFS Officers

At the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service, a training programme for mid‑career IFS officers from the 2002 and 2003 batches was attended by Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jayashankar on August 17. The minister used the platform to dissect the evolution of India’s diplomatic strategy, noting that the past decade has seen a transition from a narrow neighbourhood focus to a comprehensive agenda centred on regional peace, collaborative ventures and economic integration.

He highlighted concrete steps taken by New Delhi, such as investing in cross‑border infrastructure, enhancing trade corridors and promoting people‑to‑people contacts. The minister also stressed that the international order is in flux, driven by shifting power balances, digital transformation and the aftermath of the COVID‑19 pandemic on global supply chains.

Jayashankar called on the officers to absorb these changes and embed them into India’s foreign policy toolkit. He pointed out that India’s stature has risen in key global discussions, including the G20 summit, climate action, anti‑terrorism cooperation and reforms of multilateral bodies, making the role of diplomats more critical than ever.
