India Urges Expansion of Security Council Seats and GA Overhaul
At the United Nations General Assembly’s full session in New York, MP C P Joshi highlighted India’s demand for a revamped Security Council that includes more permanent and elected members. He said the council’s present composition no longer reflects contemporary global realities and hampers the UN’s effectiveness.
Joshi linked the need for Security Council reform with a wider overhaul of the UN system, insisting that a revitalised General Assembly must become more representative and capable of delivering on the organisation’s mandate.
He outlined three priority areas for GA reform: making the agenda more manageable by consolidating similar items and allowing periodic review of certain issues; improving coordination between the Assembly’s main committees and plenary meetings; and streamlining the Human Rights Council to avoid duplication of effort.
The Indian parliamentarian also stressed the importance of the imminent Security Council membership selection, describing it as a turning point for the UN amid serious challenges. India is prepared to work closely with other member states to strengthen the General Assembly’s role in this pivotal process.
