India and UAE Agree to Boost Consular Collaboration on Mobility and Legal Assistance

The seventh India‑UAE Joint Committee meeting took place in New Delhi, with co‑chairpersons Shripriya Ranganathan and Umar Obaid Al‑Shamsi steering the talks. Both governments affirmed their intention to reinforce cooperation under the comprehensive strategic partnership framework. Topics such as people mobility, extradition procedures, and reciprocal legal aid were examined in detail. India lauded the UAE’s efforts to protect the interests of the sizable Indian community living there, estimated at around 4.3 million individuals. The session also recalled the 1999 extradition treaty that enables the transfer of wanted criminals between the two nations. Officials stressed that stronger consular ties complement the robust trade relationship, making the UAE India’s third‑largest trading partner.
