New Delhi has elevated seasoned diplomat Pranay Verma to the position of India’s Ambassador to Belgium, with concurrent accreditation to the European Union. The announcement from the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday marks a new chapter in India’s European diplomacy.
A 1994 IFS batch officer, Verma steps down from his current role as High Commissioner in Bangladesh to helm the Brussels mission. This dual ambassadorship underscores the strategic importance of the region, especially post the historic India-EU FTA in January.
The agreement is set to eliminate tariffs on most goods, supercharging trade volumes linked to a massive share of world GDP. It will make Indian products more competitive abroad and lower prices for EU imports like cars and beverages in India.
Replacing Saurabh Kumar, who wrapped up his term at the start of the year, Verma brings a wealth of experience. His career spans over 30 years, featuring key postings such as Ambassador to Vietnam and deep insights into West Asian affairs.
The Brussels embassy, established in 1948, serves as India’s diplomatic nerve center for Belgium, Luxembourg, and the EU. Verma’s leadership will be critical in pushing the FTA through parliamentary hurdles, including legal reviews and multilingual translations.
Fresh from engaging Bangladesh’s leadership on rebuilding ties after political turbulence, Verma’s diplomatic acumen is timely. His recent meeting with PM Tarique Rahman highlighted India’s focus on mutual interests and people-oriented relations.
This appointment signals India’s intent to deepen multifaceted ties with Europe, leveraging Verma’s expertise for economic gains and geopolitical influence.
