India's Jaishankar in Atlanta as G20 Focuses on Energy Security

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar landed in Atlanta on Friday ahead of a two-day G20 foreign ministers' meeting that will focus on energy, supply chains and the security of key shipping lanes.

The agenda carries special significance for India. As one of the biggest importers of crude oil, India depends on steady flows of LNG and fertilisers, and any disruption in these supplies can affect its economy and food security.

During his visit, Jaishankar is also set to attend a meeting of Quad foreign ministers. He will additionally hold a series of bilateral talks with fellow ministers on the margins of the gathering.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is hosting the meeting. Before it began, a US State Department official said participants were united in their intent to address pressing crises and keep essential maritime routes open for trade, free from threats and tolls.

The official described energy as the bedrock of economic growth around the world, adding that it should be both affordable and abundant. The same official said that fertilisers and food are equally dependent on these routes.

Tensions in West Asia and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz have made energy security India's most significant challenge in the current situation.

The US official also flagged critical minerals as essential to energy security and advanced manufacturing. Other supply chains, including those for fertilisers, LNG, oil and manufacturing raw materials, were also described as vital.

The meeting in Atlanta is expected to address energy and supply chain challenges and identify ways to handle the impact of geopolitical tensions on economic security.

In New Delhi on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced the visit, saying the minister would attend the G20 meeting from October 30 to 31 and hold several bilateral meetings.

Following Atlanta, Jaishankar will visit Antigua and Barbuda from November 1 to 4 for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. The last Quad foreign ministers' meeting took place in New Delhi on May 26.
