Defence Cooperation Gains Ground as India Hosts Tanzanian Delegation
Defence cooperation between India and Tanzania moved forward with the inaugural Army-to-Army Staff Talks, held in New Delhi between October 27 and 29. The engagement brought together military leaders from both nations to explore structured collaboration in education, training and capacity development.
During its stay, the Tanzanian delegation visited the 505 Army Base Workshop and the DPSU Bhawan. These visits offered a first-hand view of India's military maintenance systems and its indigenous defence manufacturing framework.
The delegation later travelled to the National War Memorial, where it offered tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. The moment reflected the shared values that anchor the military ties between the two nations.
An official post on social media described the staff talks as a platform to advance bilateral defence cooperation through military education, training exchanges and capacity building. It noted that the dialogue reinforced mutual trust and a common resolve to pursue closer military engagement.
The staff talks follow a significant round of discussions earlier this year. In Zanzibar on February 2 and 3, India and Tanzania held the fourth meeting of the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee, which focused on military training, maritime security and cooperation in the defence industry.
Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) in the Ministry of Defence, co-chaired that meeting. Officials also weighed new possibilities for training in counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, electronic warfare, cyber security and artificial intelligence.
The bilateral relationship has long been characterised by friendship and cooperation. In recent years, it has expanded to include political understanding, economic partnership, people-to-people exchanges, education, health services and development cooperation.
Both countries have also worked together through capacity building programmes, concessional credit and grant-based initiatives. The relationship reached the level of strategic partnership in 2023, during the state visit of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan to India.
