India finalises standard names for Ladakh locations, China protests
On 2 October, the Government of India announced that it had officially designated standard names for 28 places in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The list, which includes peaks, passes and valleys such as Atisha Giri, Brangsa and Chapchingal, was incorporated into the Survey of India’s official maps to aid navigation, disaster response and civilian awareness. The Home Ministry released a statement highlighting that accurate place‑name data is crucial for development projects and security operations in the high‑altitude region. China’s foreign ministry responded the next day, describing the move as a unilateral attempt to rewrite the map and calling it illegal. Mao Ning reaffirmed that Beijing does not accept the creation of a “centrally administered” Ladakh and that any Indian renaming cannot affect the longstanding border demarcation.
