India-Cyprus Ties Strengthen as Jaishankar Meets Christodoulides in Nicosia

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides on Thursday in the Cypriot capital, marking another step forward in the growing partnership between the two countries. Their conversation focused on regional developments in West Asia and India's expanding role in the Mediterranean. In a post on X after the meeting, Jaishankar shared that he conveyed warm greetings from India's top leadership. He noted that the recent state visit by the Cyprus President had delivered tangible results and moved the relationship into its next phase. Both sides agreed to maintain strong momentum through follow-up mechanisms. The leaders also discussed how shifting dynamics in the Middle East could impact broader regional stability and India's interests in the Mediterranean. Jaishankar's visit coincides with his participation in an informal gathering of EU foreign ministers. He used the opportunity to hold separate meetings with foreign ministers from several countries including the Netherlands, Poland, France, Ukraine, Estonia, and Saudi Arabia. The timing is particularly notable given that President Christodoulides had visited India just days earlier. During that visit, New Delhi and Nicosia formally decided to elevate their ties to a strategic partnership. Prime Minister Modi had welcomed the Cypriot leader at Hyderabad House and highlighted the potential for deeper cooperation in trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. Key deliverables from the bilateral engagement include a new Joint Working Group on counter-terrorism, academic collaboration between diplomatic training institutes, and joint initiatives in higher education and research.
